The Investigator/Observer

Core Need/Motivation
Type Fives have a need to feel resourced, to be knowledgeable, capable and competent.

Characteristics
Type Fives are analytical, rational, factual, and often private.

Description
Type Fives “believe they must protect themselves from a world that demands too much and gives too little.” (narrativeenneagram.org) Consequently, they strive for self-sufficiency and are often non-demanding and unobtrusive.A sense of being under-resourced often causes Type Fives to stand back and observe first, particularly when participating in something unfamiliar. They gather facts and knowledge to prepare themselves, synthesizing this information for greater understanding. Once they understand how things work, they answer questions with remarkable depth. If they have not had time to think something through or develop understanding, they are unlikely to respond impulsively or speculate. They are careful not to present certainty where they do not feel competent.

Type Fives naturally tend toward curiosity and often question commonly held perspectives in search of deeper truths and wisdom. While they might spend too much time in research and thought, this can also provide a solid foundation on which to build. When they do engage in work or other activities, they do it with efficiency. Type Fives feel that they have a bucket of energy for each day, that it will be drained throughout the day, and that they need to protect that energy from running out. They often feel that once their bucket is empty, they have no more to give.

Type Fives value privacy, and strongly prefer to share only when asked, or only if they trust the one asking.

Primary Center: Head/Intellectual

As thinking types, Fives naturally seek to develop knowledge and expertise. They tend to dwell in their heads and avoid body sensations or feelings, instead processing intellectually. They can be sensitive to sound, touch and intrusion, and Type Fives hold tension mostly in the gut. Focusing on their intellect, they can miss out on being present in their bodies and living into heart-centered emotions.

The Gifts of Type Fives

Type Fives can be relied upon to provide excellently researched work. Fives often aim for objectivity and can detach from personal bias in order to analyze clearly. In chaotic situations, Type Fives keep a calm and cool disposition, providing perspective to those around them.

Challenges for Type Fives

Because Type Fives feel that they have a limited amount of energy, they can hoard or reserve their energy and be perceived as detached and aloof. It is difficult for them to engage fully because of their fear of depletion. Type Fives can be perceived as detached, isolated, and overly intellectual.

Communication with Type Fives

Type Fives are clear and analytical and typically do not enjoy small talk.

When interacting with Type Fives, it is helpful to understand their orientation towards running out of energy and to respect their need for privacy. It is helpful to give them space (physical and emotional) so that they can feel safe enough to share about themselves.
